Arizona Legislature: Find out what YOUR lawmakers are doing

Don’t ask where the governor is

Man… Time flies trying to root out what our leaders at the state Capitol are plotting and scheming these days.

That’s why I wanted to share this hot piece of video before it got old and dated.

Last Friday our governor unveiled her $8.9 billion state spending plan. But unlike other governors across the country, Jan Brewer was too busy to take questions from pain-in-the-butt-reporters.

How do we know this…? After watching her staff deliver a riveting slide show presentation on the budget (that’s sarcasm, folks), I simply asked. “Where’s the governor.”

Apparently that’s the kind of tough question that gets under the political skin of some Brewer staffers.

As you’ll see, governor’s affable budget guru, John Arnold, tried making a joke by telling me, “you need to raise your hand, son.”

But it was Brewer’s spokesman Matthew Benson got real grumpy. Brewer, he said, was around but he wouldn’t but wouldn’t be taking questions.

What was Brewer doing? We never found out because Benson wasn’t saying. And then he questioned my question by asking, “Do you have a point…”

Benson did say there’d be other opportunities to question the governor about her budget plan. That might be little bit harder for us in the TV biz.

You see print reporters got one-on-one interviews with Brewer a couple of weeks ago to discuss her upcoming legislative agenda. But boob-tube reporters, well, we got squat.

Did Benson think he was being clever by answering your question with a question? I’ll answer that: No. He was being deceitful.
